Summer Southern Pyrenees Music Festival

Sallent de Gallego has gone through considerable expansion in recent years mainly due to its importance as a summer mountaineering centre and winter ski destination but the development has been sympathetic to the area and it has retained its typical mountain town charm. There are some stunning architectural delights to visit including the gorgeous Gothic church dating from the beginning of the 16th century, the impressive bridge crossing the Gallego and the village square.

Sallent is a well used stop on the Spanish coast to coast GR11 walking route. There are numerous excursions for walkers from here and magnificent scenery to explore including the circo de Piedrafita, the Infierno peaks, and the Ibones d’Anayet glacial lake.

At the nearby Lanuza reservoir by an abandoned lakeside town, the Southern Pyrenees Music Festival takes place during the summer every year. This is one of Europe’s best world music festivals and celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2006.

A further 5km from Sallent and you reach the purpose built ski resort of El Formigal. The ski domain has undergone considerable expansion recently adding a much improved snowpark and a further 15km and 10 new pistes to amass a total of 105km of downhill skiing. The 80 pistes now cater well for all levels of ability along with the additional opportunity of night skiing and even dogsled excursions.

The village of El Formigal itself is lively and has a good selection of restaurants on and off the mountain, serving solid local fare. The nightlife can get quite raucous, although the resort is still a suitable venue for families.
