The Garonne river snakes its way over the Pyrenees mountains from Spain and enters France at Saint-Béat. The surrounding area provides the perfect playground for active pursuits. From high altitude lakes, rapid waters and challenging peaks above 3000m to the largest underground cave system in France. This area is ideal in the summer for canyoning, rafting, potholing, paragliding, mountain biking, hiking or climbing.
For your winter ski or snowboard trip choose from one of the following; go to Luchon for the best après-ski, soak away aches and pains in a thermal spa before enjoying a slice of café culture. Peyragudes offers more potential for advanced skiers and boarders and the area tends to hold the snow well. The smaller resort of Le Mourtis is more suited for parents wishing to keep their children within a reasonable distance!
For architectural inspiration try the 11th century cathedral of St Bertrand de Comminges. Situated above the village the cathedral holds a commanding view over the plain below. Equally famous for its choir stalls, each one was painstakingly carved by a different craftsman. For a Roman experience visit Montmaurin, thought to be one of the largest Gallo Roman villas in France.
