The spectacular sea cliffs at Zumaia are one of the world's most important and best known geological sanctuaries. The rocks that make up the nearly vertical layers were formed by the accumulation of sediments on the sea floor millions of years ago. Later, the uplifting of the Pyrenees Mountains, coupled with the unrelenting wave erosion, revealed 50 million years of our planet’s history, defined layer by layer like the pages of a fabulous history book. Reading between the strata and by studying the fossils contained within, it is possible to decipher some of the earth’s best kept historical secrets – climatic cycles, the impact of a meteorite that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs or the last period of global warming. There’s a whole new world to discover in a fascinating journey through time. In addition to this geological treasure, Zumaia includes different formations and Cantabrian ecosystems, such as the impressive Deba-Zumaia marine abrasion platform – declared a protected biotype – the Santiago dunes, Artadi holm-oak wood and the Bedua islands and marshlands. Visit the Algorri interpretation centre in Zumaia for the geological exhibition, a film documentary on the sea cliffs at Zumaia and to choose one of the interesting guided tours. |
