3 miles north of Saint Paul de Fenouillet you will find the awe-inspiring Gorges de Galamus. This was probably the first inhabited place around Saint Paul de Fenouillet with early man seeking shelter in one of the many limestone caves that can be seen in amongst the giddying cliffs. The picturesque Galamus Gorge has been carved into the cliffs by the fast flowing Agly River which has eroded ravines up to 300metres deep. Typical Mediterranean plants grow on the steep slopes such as evergreen oaks, juniper trees and Cyclamen whilst Eagles soar overhead. The winding narrow road clings to the cliff edge providing a dramatic drive up through the gorge. As you travel along the impressive route it is clear to see why this stretch of road has featured in several car commercials. Stopping on the south side of the Gorge it is worth taking the 20 minute walk up to the dramatic, cliff hugging Ermitage St Antoine-de-Galamus. From here you can enjoy spectacular views of the river below. For a more relaxing trip take advantage of the free bus service from the car park in peak season. The Galamus Gorge and the torrential Agly River have become a favourite destination for canyoning and rafting. |
