From the middle ages to modern times Originally a medieval shelter for pilgrims on the Santiago di Compostella pilgrimage route, then reconstructed in the XVII and XVIII centuries the hospice at Ille sur Tet is a rare architectural specimen in the south of France. Situated in the old fortified city of Ille sur Tet, a lively Catalan town, the hospice is surrounded by a maze of narrow streets that make up the old city and stand testament to the area’s medieval past. Today the hospice is home to a permanent exhibition depicting Catalan life from medieval times up to the modern day. The works on display including paintings, murals and sculptures constitute a fine collection of Roman frescoes and Baroque art. Every year, the Hospice at Ille sur Tet also organizes temporary exhibitions to compliment the fine collection of Roman and Baroque art. |
