In the Baronnies Valley close to the Escaladieu abbey, perched on top of a 567m hill is the appealing Mauvezin castle. First fortified by the Romans this castle has changed hands on numerous occasions, particularly during the hundred years war between England and France (1337 to 1453). The castle finally passed to Gaston Phoebus, the 11th count of Foix in 1379. The colossal 37 metre high keep was added and the ramparts raised to further fortify the castle. The castle was finally handed over to ‘Escòle Gaston Febus’, a conservation society run to preserve and promote the ancient Gascon and Occitan language and culture. Through considerable fund raising and voluntary work the society is running an ongoing restoration program. A museum is now housed in the fully restored tower which features the castle and Occitan literature. Every Sunday throughout July and August the Escòle Gaston Febus present an interesting medieval spectacle recreating life in the castle during the 11th and 12th centuries. The castle provides the opportunity for a full day out; visit the castle and tour the grounds in the morning, spread out a picnic in the chateau grounds for lunch and then relax on the grass in the afternoon and enjoy the surroundings before heading back home. |
