Situated at 1600m altitude and surrounded by beautiful lakes and forests you will find the picturesque village resort of Les Angles. Here, the Les Angles Animal Park provides a unique setting to see the wildlife that has roamed in the Pyrenees. There are over 10 species to see including wolves, wild boar, marmottes, Bison and the Brown Bear. The Pyrenees is synonymous with the Brown Bear. The largest carnivore in France it once roamed over most of Europe but is now an endangered species virtually non-existent in Western Europe. This popular creature has been the centre of many fables and legends and still sparks debate today as a program of reintroduction to the Pyrenees continues. A group of Slovenian brown bears were turned loose in the mountains in 1996 to restore the native population after ruthless hunting in the Eighties and a further five Slovenian bears are set to join the population of fourteen to eighteen bears already living in the Pyrenees. You can choose from a variety of routes through the Les Angles Animal Park, from the grand circuit covering three and a half kilometres to the much shorter prehistoric walk. Picnic areas line the route so you can take your time and stop for a break at your convenience. |
