Situated in the Baronnies Valley at the village of Esparros is this incredible chasm. Legend has it that it was discovered by a shepherdess who kept losing sheep in the area but it was Norbert Casteret, the famous French caving pioneer, who in 1938 led an exploration into the chasm, mapping the underground network and envisioning the mysterious rock formations such as the ‘Gallery of Alhambra’ and ‘the room of the virgin’. The chasm has had an eventful life, used as a safe house for secret documents in the 2nd world war and it was the location of the first radio phonic report carried out under ground in 1942. A mass was celebrated in the Gallery of Aragonite in April 1945 when a statue of the Virgin Mary was sealed on a stalagmite and finally in 1997 the chasm opened to the public. Esparros chasm, about 110m deep has developed over thousands of years through the movement of the water against the limestone rock. Visitors can now walk through the huge halls on a horizontal platform from where you can admire the amazing rock formations. Commentary is provided through audio posts and completed by guides who lead the groups and personalise the visit. A light and sound display completes an interesting and informative visit. |
