Thermal conditions in the central Pyrenees lend themselves perfectly for motorless flight. The airfield in Luchon (Aeroclub), France is a well known spot for glider flights which provide an ideal way to view the Pyrenean landscape from the air. Glide effortlessly on the rising air currents high above the rugged mountains.
Hang gliding reached its peak in popularity in the eighties but is still practised in the Pyrenees where the thermal conditions are ideal. Comprising of a sail on an aluminium frame with the pilot strapped in a hammock-like harness, steering is done by the pilot re-distributing his weight.
Paragliding (also known as Parapenting) has now emerged as the most popular way of taking to the air. A mix of hang-gliding and parachuting, the skies around some resorts are often lit up with numerous paragliders falling with style back to resort. This is an all year round sport which benefits from the dramatic changes seen in the landscape between the summer and winter. Try a tandem flight and marvel at the superb views from the sky.
