Will the 2007/08 season be THE year for great snowfall?
La Niña, and the negative North Atlantic Oscillation are two climatic phenomena that can have a dramatic effect to the weather systems. This year they could well be aligned leading to an absolute bumper year for the Pyrenees!
La Niña is the lesser known sister of El Niño. Where an El Niño year may cause hot dry conditions in some regions a La Niña year will tend to create the opposite bringing cold wet weather, or put another way, heaps of snow across Europe’s mountain ranges.
The North Atlantic Oscillation is similar to El Niño but concentrated on the Pyrenees’ closest neighbour, Atlantic Ocean. The effect of a negative oscillation is lower air pressure and suppressed westerly winds, which could lead to cold, wet winters and heaps more snow across the Pyrenees.
